Fez

Royal city and former capital Fez is located north of the Atlas Mountains and quickly became one of the most popular destinations in Morocco. Well-deserved because Fez is a beautiful old spiritual city full of surprises. The ochre yellow medina is a 9000-street labyrinth where time seems to have stopped. Streets are just wide enough for a donkey to pass through and new surprises await you around every corner. This might be a mosque, market, museum, tannery, Koran school or tiny restaurant. Getting lost here is inevitable, but it’s the best way to get to know this special place and its lovely inhabitants – called Fassi.

The medina of Fez -Fes el-Bali- is the largest in the world and encompasses 1200 years of history. It is also the largest car-free center of the world and consists of a dense network of narrow alleys. Tapping of donkey hooves and craftsmen in the streets can be heard here and wandering around is the order of the day. The medina consists of 2 main streets, Tala’a Kebira and the Tala’a Sghira. As soon as you enter a side street, you will discover many surprises. Take your time to get to know the ingenious street pattern, on your own or accompanied by a guide. We can help you with a good and reliable guide who will pick you up at Chez Khadija. Are you going on a souvenir hunt in the medina for artisan souvenirs?

When you have had enough of the medina, take one of the super cheap cabs to the Jewish quarter or the newer part of town, Le Nouvelle Ville. You’ll find hotels, cafes, restaurants, shopping malls and nightclubs here. Or go on an excursion. A nice change of pace and scenery.
